CMYK vs RGB: Which Colour Mode Should You Use?

February 9, 2026

If colours look different on screen vs print, it’s usually down to colour mode. This guide explains CMYK vs RGB and what to export.

RGB is for screens

RGB is how monitors display colour. It can look brighter than print.

CMYK is for print

CMYK is the ink-based colour system for printing. Some bright RGB colours can’t be matched exactly in ink.

What to send to print

Best practice: CMYK PDF at 300dpi, with bleed where needed. RGB can be printed, but expect small shifts.

Better colour consistency

  • Avoid neon RGB colours
  • Use correct blacks
  • Ask about samples for brand-critical work
